In 2000, several of us started the Charleston Area Children’s Garden Project. We undertake to create learning centers out of unused spaces in neighborhoods, schools, after school programs, shelters for the homeless and community centers. The gardens are about discovery, wonder, imagination and anything anybody would like to help the kids learn—-from magic to laying a brick, from optics to history. We’ve never found anything we couldn’t tie to what was going on in our gardens. I am now working up a master file of all the good material we have accumulated over the years to become a resource to others.

Hi Kyra,
Great to hear from you. I thought I would start this group based on my own experiences here in Mississippi. Check out http://www.global-gardens.org/. Global Gardens is an amazing nonprofit based in the United States. Excellent ideas for both teachers and parents when looking for a place to start with garden curriculum.

My school has a wonderful nature area that the children enjoy tending. We just received a large donation for adding on to our building and part of the addition will be a court yard with a new garden space! I am excited to share information about these projects with others!
